New Code NLP

The new code is a set of patterns developed in the mid-1980s by me (John Grinder) with contributions initially by Judith Delozier and subsequently by Carmen Bostic St Clair.

The motivations for the creation of the New Code are multiple and include recognition that the coding of patterning I accomplished with Richard Bandler, in the creation of NLP, contained a number of serious flaws. In the late 1970s, I noticed a significant number of NLP-trained practitioners who were stunningly effective in doing change work with clients, yet these practitioners had chosen to, or lacked the choice to, apply the patterns of NLP successfully to themselves. I, therefore, set out with the intention of designing a set of patterns that both corrected coding flaws of the classic code (my collaborative work with Bandler from 1974 through 1978) that could not be effectively presented unless the presenter was congruent with self-application.

New Code NLP

New Code NLP is the recoding and the reformation of the principles of Classic Code NLP that focuses more so on the client’s state, intention and unconscious mind. New Code understands that the unconscious mind is capable of accessing countless more possibilities than the conscious mind, allowing the process of change to arise organically, with long lasting results. New Code NLP instructs the unconscious to choose the appropriate resources to create the desired change.

New Code NLP can be described as an updated version of NLP, encompassing many highly effective patterns of the Classic Code. A great analogy of New Code NLP can be thought of as running Windows software on your PC. From the time that Microsoft first introduced Windows 1.0 in 1985 we have seen many versions with the current version being 10.0. If we were still operating Windows 1.0, we wouldn’t be able to use our PC with today’s technology. It is clear to see that every version improved with each update. By combining the best features of the previous version, and ditching some of the more controversial features, Microsoft has created a fresh, faster and enhanced operating system, until the next version is created.

New Code NLP has done exactly the same, creating an enhanced version of Classic Code NLP by making some major updates, taking the best features of Classic Code NLP, to bring to the world an ever-evolving, faster, enhanced NLP model for more effective change.

Origins of New Code NLP

New Code NLP was developed initially by John Grinder and Judith Delozier, and then with Carmen Bostic St Clair. Michael Carroll joined the development team later. John initially wanted to correct coding flaws in the Classic Code NLP and recognised the increasing number of NLP Practitioners who, although well-versed and effective in NLP, needed significant help with their own lives. John highlights that the self-application of New Code patterns is an indispensable part of training for New Code NLP Practitioners.

During our training with John Grinder we had the opportunity to ask about the origins of New Code NLP. John recalls that one of many stages of laying the foundations of New Code NLP was when he would go rock climbing. He would begin in a state which would allow him to fully experience the challenge. The activation of this state resulted in the interruption of his own conscious filters and any internal dialogue. This is known as the ‘Know Nothing’ state. He would climb completely unconsciously and with total ambiguity to the direction of his climb. After his climb, he would be in a more resourceful state and have the answers to any problems he was facing prior to entering the Know Nothing state.

Participating in the climb would create the ‘High-Performance’ state, allowing his unconscious to make decisions as to how best to tackle his specific challenge or task. John explains this as the process of inductively creating New Code NLP by repetitive patterning between the conscious and unconscious.

High Performance States

New Code NLP targets change through the elevation of our inner state, not our actions.

We focus our efforts on the clients’ state because the position of our state sits significantly higher in our internal hierarchy than our behaviours. A change in our state presents us with a range of diverse, naturally occurring behaviours that activate neurological circuits and serve as the basis for changes selected by the client.

It is essential to ensure the client fully accesses a highly effective state to create resourceful choices on an unconscious level. In New Code NLP this is called a ‘High-Performance’ state. The structure and process of each New Code NLP game is designed to ensure High-Performance states are present within clients, and then transferred to the context where they want increased choice.

An extremely efficient way of accessing a High-Performance state is by using a New Code NLP game. Resource states are generated directly through involvement in an activity; it’s the game that produces the actual High-Performance state, which allows access to vast amounts of resources existing in the unconscious mind.

One of the most effective ways to trigger a resourceful state is by changing one’s physiology and breathing. Using appropriate states is a creative and generative approach to producing both ecological and continual change.

New Code NLP Games

The New Code vehicle to change is through the use of playing specific NLP games that stimulate the mind and create content-free High-Performance states in its players. These content-free states arise as the result of the game being played, once these states are activated they can be applied to any context where a change is desired. The structure of the game is intended to ensure High-Performance states are present within the client before the state-to-context transfer occurs.

The principles of New Code NLP games consist of engaging all three major representational systems (VAK) and cross-lateralized movements to entirely involve both hemispheres of the brain. Increasing complexity is also key when wanting to scale-up the tasks, leading to greater access to the desired state. With the context specified by the client, the games activate neurological circuits that serve as the foundation for change.

The collaboration of these principles creates a High-Performance state, which also enables access to the ‘Know Nothing’ state – the highest level you can achieve by way of experiencing New Code games.

A High-Performance state is when the client is performing without consciously thinking through the process.

A Know Nothing state is when a client is performing at an elevated level without any conscious awareness.

“NLP CANNOT BE LEARNED BY A BOOK OR BY READING AN ARTICLE ON A WEBSITE. TO TRULY LEARN NLP YOU NEED TO EXPERIENCE IT. AND YOU CAN ONLY EXPERIENCE IT THROUGH PARTICIPATION, PRACTICE, COMMUNICATION, AND HUMAN INTERACTION.”

The Direction of NLP

NLP is heading in a new direction; John Grinder, Carmen Bostic St. Clair and Michael Carroll are constructing games and advancing the scope of New Code NLP alongside the many accredited New Code NLP trainers. There are processes and effective strategies that continue to be developed, tested and assimilated into the ever-developing field of New Code NLP.

NLP as an application has been so immensely successful and practical that many of its models have been incorporated into; leadership & management strategies, sales processes, coaching formats, public speaking tools, psychotherapy, education, sports performance and personal development.

NLP has undoubtedly stood the test of time and is proven to contain the most transformative set of processes and strategies available in the personal development field. Its effectiveness and proficiency in providing sustainable change can only be described by those who experience its insights. NLP provides accelerated processes and dynamic applications for producing deep, lasting and natural changes.

Classic Code NLP, combined with New Code NLP, is a powerful transformational tool and has contributed to improving the lives of so many people. Its wisdom is as relevant today as it was when it was first conceived.
